What is Trauma Informed Care (TIC)?

Trauma Informed Care is an organizational structure and treatment framework that involves understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma.

Why should you take Trauma Informed Care courses?

Many of the people we interact with every day have been affected by overwhelming stress or traumatic experiences. Traumatic experiences change a person and can create turmoil within a person and in their life. This is especially true if events and/or conditions happen in childhood.

The purpose of the Trauma Informed Care (TIC) Project is to increase knowledge about trauma and the impact it has by creating connection, sharing knowledge and resources. TIC offers resources for individuals who help those impacted by trauma provide patient centred care.

How do TIC Modules relate to new standards on Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct?

Last year in November, the Alberta government passed Bill 21: An Act to Protect Patients. The new amendments to the Health Professions Act (HPA) signal an increased appreciation for patient safety. The purpose of amending the Health Professions Act is to better enforce protections for patients with complaints of sexual abuse and sexual misconduct.

The Trauma Informed Care modules will help members better understand how trauma can affect the way an individual behaves and interacts with others. Having the tools to communicate with individuals who have experienced trauma will help both the Optician and their patient have a better experience.
